Street Fair Fun

What a festive weekend in Glen Rock! We sold many, many books and countless confections! Our Friends group worked very hard to make the stop at the library worthwhile, and the community came out in large numbers to support our effort.
It was a day of fun and celebration - a celebration to honor the 150th birthday of Glen Rock! One of the most well-attended Street Fairs that I've experienced; with great weather to match :)
Our book sale continues through the month of June - stop in and pick up a great read at a price that can't be beat!

Summer Reading Means Fun!

Summer Reading Club is in full swing and we invite you to take part! Pictured is Beth Rebert who entertained the children with her vivid storytelling. She swept them up and took them to the high seas as she re-told the story of Magic Fish.

Next up: Oh! A Puppet Show! (July 7)....a puppet theater that comes alive and T-shirt Day (July 8).....kids color the design with fabric crayons and it gets ironed on your 50/50 t-shirt.

It's hot outside, and cool in the library........join us for a summer of fun, imagination, and many free prizes! Visit our website for more great programs, scheduled through August 4.

Music Night at the Huff!

It doesn't get much better than this! Musical group Three Dollar Suit headlined an evening of instrumental and vocal talent in an open mic format. The evening was for all in the community to enjoy- a time to share the gift of music, munch on snacks, and discuss the happenings around town.
The next Music Night is slated for September, and our plan is to showcase this event throughout the year. There's no charge to come and listen, or to share your talent!

Art in Libraries

We are fortunate here at the Hufnagel Library to be surrounded by many local, talented artists. This month we are featuring artist Nancy Woodrow, a Glen Rock artisan who brings folk art alive with vivid colors and beautiful antique frames.
Every month showcases a new artist; and just like the books on our shelves, the art is varied and appealing to many different tastes!
If you are an artist and would your work to be shown at our library, please call 235-1127 and ask for Gina Mumaw.

Commemorative Items For Sale

The town of Glen Rock turns 150 this summer, and we have a display of unique, one-of-a-kind items for sale to commemorate this milestone. Wooden nickles, T-shirts, hats, etched bottles, note cards, fleece scarves, calendars, and much more are available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Sesquicentennial Committee, which in turn benefits the celebration. Don't miss out in the fun - a parade, street fair, walking tour, wine tasting, and a huge book sale here at the library, are all events that will lend to the festivities. Details to come in the months ahead - in the meantime, stop in and grab a bit of history!

Did You Know?

Here in Glen Rock we have a Historical Committee that has worked very hard on preserving and sharing local points of interest. As you enter our building, a hallway welcomes you with a mural, a showcase of old artifacts, and walls lined with beautiful old photographs of many different areas of Glen Rock. The committee has displayed each photo with a small summary describing the building or place of interest and its historical significance to the town and its people. Copies of each displayed photograph are for sale; order forms are available as you enter the lobby. So, if you have a few extra minutes, take a stroll down the hall and read about how Glen Rock came to be!

The Tree That Gives

We have a tree in the library.... a Giving Tree that is! The adornments are labeled with items needed for the library, such as tape, markers, paper, disinfectant wipes, paper towels, etc. This year we added one year magazine subscriptions to the list. All of this, of course, is to help offset the recent budget cuts to the library system. If every patron who visits our library picks just one star off the tree, we would be well supplied for 2010.

It's not always about the big giving. Sometimes when we all give collectively in a small way, progress can be seen and change becomes inevitable.

Story Time with Miss Joanne

Story time in the library brings with it a certain energy..... excitement, laughter (sometimes crying!), but always a sense of wonder. These little guys and girls so enjoy the reading of a story and the craft time that follows. Miss Joanne is amazing and really brings the pages of the book alive. Books truly are the gateway to learning and imagination; and how lucky are we to work in a place that has endless possibilities for all ages!
Join in the fun! Story times are every Thursday and Saturday at 11:00 - no need to register; just drop by and get lost in a book!

Warmth Surrounds Us

Giving to those in need has been an important part of our Friends of the Library group. Again this year we put up our wooden drying rack with a simple sign asking for hat, scarf and mitten donations. These contributions will benefit homeless shelters in York City; and ever so timely with the bitter cold upon us.
So the gesture of pinning a hat or a scarf on our simple wooden rack really will go a long way for someone in need. It's the small things that connect the human spirit and help us to focus on those less fortunate.
